A field, a tent and freedom sounds like the cheap option. It is the most honest quote in weddings, because you build the venue yourself.
The marquee dream runs like this: a family field, a beautiful tent, no venue fees, freedom to do everything your way. All of it is true. What the dream omits is that a marquee wedding means building a venue from bare grass, and every service a venue quietly includes arrives on your quote as a line of its own.
The tent is the cheap part
A quality marquee for a hundred guests, whether sailcloth, clearspan or stretch, typically runs £3,000 to £7,000 with lining, flooring and basic lighting. That is the headline number couples budget for. The building starts underneath it. Generators, because a domestic supply will not run catering and a band. Loos, because neither will the house bathroom, and decent units cost real money. A catering tent, tables, chairs, a dance floor, heating for anything outside July, fridges, and lighting for the field itself so guests can find the car park at midnight.
As a working rule, take the marquee quote and double it to reach the true infrastructure cost. For our hundred guests that lands somewhere between £8,000 and £15,000 before a single canapé.
Catering in a field
Field catering is its own discipline. Caterers bring the kitchen with them, and the good ones quote accordingly: expect per head prices similar to a venue's, sometimes higher, plus staffing that reflects the distance between the catering tent and the top table. The saving arrives in one glorious line instead: the bar. Buying your own alcohol, with no corkage and no venue markup, saves £1,500 to £4,000 on a hundred guests, and it is the single genuine bargain of the marquee wedding.
What the freedom is worth
Set against a venue charging £150 a head, a well run marquee wedding for a hundred often lands within a few thousand pounds either side. So the question is not really cost. It is whether you want what the field uniquely offers: no curfew negotiated with a duty manager, any caterer you like, a bar priced like a supermarket, and a place that means something. For couples with the right field and the right constitution, that trade is worth every hired generator. Just make it with the full quote in view, not the tent alone.
