UK wedding budgets have barely moved in three years, and that is more interesting than it sounds

Three years within about one per cent of each other. In a period that included the sharpest food inflation in decades, that is not a boring number. That is couples holding a line.
Flat is not the same as cheaper
The temptation is to read a flat average as belt tightening. The detail says otherwise. Spend per guest went up four per cent, from £261 to £272.
Put those two facts together and you get the actual story. The budget stayed the same. The amount spent on each person went up. Which means the guest list came down.
That is a decision, not a cut. Couples worked out that eighty people fed properly is a better day than a hundred and forty fed adequately, and they acted on it.
What it means for your own planning
Two practical things follow.
The first is that if you are budgeting near the average, you are not being modest. Twenty thousand pounds is what a normal wedding costs in this country, and the number has been stable long enough to plan against with some confidence.
The second is that the guest list is the most powerful lever you own. At £272 a head, twenty names is £5,440. No amount of negotiating on flowers gets you that.
Nobody remembers the wedding they were invited to out of obligation. Several people remember the one where the food was extraordinary.
The number to be careful with
Averages hide enormous variation, and different surveys measure different things. Other 2026 figures for the same question land near £22,000, because they include or exclude different items, and regional gaps are far wider than any national average suggests.
Use the average to sanity check yourself, not to set your budget. Your budget is your own number, built from your own guest list and your own venue quote.
