Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja: the Mumbai wedding week that started the modern era
A Sikh ceremony at a family home, a reception where Bollywood danced till dawn, and Everyday Phenomenal as a wedding motto. The 2018 celebration that set the template.
Before Como and the fortress weddings, there was May 2018 in Mumbai. Sonam Kapoor, Bollywood's reigning fashion authority, married entrepreneur Anand Ahuja in a celebration that established much of what Indian celebrity weddings, and their British diaspora cousins, now treat as standard: the multi event week, the fashion press coverage of every look, and the family home at the centre of it all.
The home anchored week
The Anand Karaj took place at a family bungalow in Bandra, turned into a wedding house in the old style, mehndi and sangeet unfolding around it across the preceding days. The message, from an industry family that could have hired any palace on earth: the ancestral home is the venue money cannot book. The evening reception then swung to full spectacle, with what appeared to be the entire film industry on one dance floor, a two part structure, sacred at home, party at scale, that countless weddings have since copied.
Fashion as coverage
Sonam's wedding wardrobe was reported like a couture week: traditional red for the ceremony, a sculptural Anamika Khanna for the reception, each guest's outfit its own headline. The wedding effectively invented the modern Indian celebrity wedding as a fashion media event, with sanctioned photography and coordinated release. Every controlled reveal wedding since operates downstream of it.
The groom's sneakers
One detail became folklore: the couple's shared motto, Everyday Phenomenal, and a groom so devoted to sneakers that the dress codes bent around him. It humanised the spectacle and marked an early instance of what is now everywhere, couples letting their actual personalities breach the formalwear. The wedding hashtag culture, the friends' choreographed performances, the professionally filmed sangeet, all of it was either born or perfected that week.
Six years of grander productions have followed, but the Sonam and Anand week remains the reference for one reason: it proved the modern formula, tradition at the core, fashion as the language, home as the heart, before anyone else did it at that volume.
