The 2026 wedding cake: smaller, stranger, better

The three tier white monument is losing its crown. What is replacing it, what cakes cost now, and whether you need one at all.

The wedding cake spent a century as architecture: white, tiered, ceremonial, and half eaten. It is now in the middle of the most interesting decade of its life. The couples marrying this year are shrinking it, personalising it, sometimes multiplying it and occasionally abolishing it, and the cake table has never been better for it.

What is actually trending

Smaller and stranger, in the best way. Single tier cakes with sculptural finishes, lambeth piping revived from the seventies, buttercream in colours no bride of 1995 would have permitted, pressed flowers, ceramic-like glazes. The heritage turn is strong too: British couples are putting their cultures on the cake table, from mithai towers to croquembouche to a proper Caribbean black cake, and the single showpiece is increasingly flanked by a dessert table doing the real feeding.

The vintage revival deserves its own line: cherubs, swags, piped kitsch reclaimed with total sincerity. What was your grandmother's cake is now the most photographed object at the reception.

What cakes cost

Custom wedding cakes in the UK broadly run £4 to £12 per serving, which lands a three tier for a hundred guests between £400 and £900, with celebrated makers above that. The money buys structure and hours: sugar work is slow, delivery is nervous, and a tiered cake is quietly an engineering project. A single statement tier for the photographs plus kitchen sheet cakes for serving delivers the look for roughly half the spend, and no guest has ever noticed.

Do you need one at all

No, and the couples skipping it are not philistines; they are usually redirecting the budget to a dessert course or a cheese tower with actual conviction behind it. But before abolishing, know what the cake is for. The cutting is one of the last rituals guests still gather to watch, a two minute ceremony inside the party, and it photographs like nothing else on the night. Plenty of couples keep a modest cake purely as the excuse for that moment, then serve pudding from elsewhere.

The direction of travel is the same as everywhere in weddings: from monument to meaning. Whatever sits on the cake table in 2026, it is there because the couple chose it, and it is probably delicious, which the monuments, in fairness, rarely were.
